I usually send a blog about every three-to-four weeks. But this whole Covid thing has gotten me sending weekly blogs. I guess it is the rate of change that makes three-to-four weeks seem like months or years. Maybe we’re living dog years, with a seven-to-one ratio, through this. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting Covid Crazy and it is manifesting in a lot of unusual observations and thoughts.
Social Distancing
The whole Social Distancing thing is weird. It seems more like Physical Distancing to me. We’re still being social, maybe more so, just staying physically separated. Zooming around is easier than the commutes I used to make, although it isn’t quite the same. Of course, as an accountant, I’ve been Anti-Social Distancing for years…
PPP
I remember when PPP meant Piss Poor Performance. Now it means Paycheck Protection Program. Of course, with the way the new PPP has been rolled out, I think PPP has become a double entendre.
PPP Experts
Speaking of PPP loans, I keep reading stuff about “PPP Experts,” especially in the business media. How did they become experts? There is no history of PPP loans as the program is completely new, so they didn’t become experts through experience. The law is there but the promised regulations haven’t been published and the rules keep changing. No one has asked for forgiveness on a PPP loan yet. Experts? Self-appointed at best.
Unemployment
We’ve got more people on unemployment than in any time since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Clearly, unemployment is not working…
Herd Immunity
The pandemic has increased our vocabularies. Before Covid, who had heard of “herd immunity?” Epidemiologists had, of course. But herd immunity is typically achieved by inoculating 60 percent of the population. What people are talking about now is letting the disease run its course until 60 percent of the population has survived the virus. Now, 60 percent of the U.S. population is 200 million people. Of those, one percent, two million people, will die. Many of the survivors will have their health compromised for life. And the healthcare system will be overwhelmed as we get from two percent (the current portion of the population who have experienced the virus) to 60 percent. I think I’ve heard enough about herd immunity.
The New National Sport
It seems walking has become the new national sport. The combination of time on our hands and the great weather has lots of individuals and families out walking; one positive from the lockdown. Running and riding bikes seem to be close runners up (pun intended) to walking. This beats watching professional sports on television. It would be nice of this part was a permanent change.
Amazon Rules the World
Amazon’s supply chain has been tested and done pretty well. We’ve become awfully dependent on them. I find myself ordering a lot online. In fact, I ordered both a Chicken and an Egg from Amazon. I’ll let you know.
I’m here all week.
